Regions refer to the centralized servers that game creators make available to players. Almost all online games have several central server hubs – called regions – that players must login to play. Generally players are advised to play in the region geographically closest to them so as to minimize the lag, or ping, of each player’s internet connection.
For example, in Starcraft 2, the regions are: US West, US East, KR (Korea), EU (European Union), and SEA (South-East Asia).
In professional competitions, team brackets are often grouped into regions, similar to region Divisions in US athletics like the NFC and AFC. Global tournaments will typically invite a number of prominent teams from each region to compete in the overall category.
Each region tends to have its own unique ‘meta’ or playstyle that players from other regions oftentimes find confusing or unexpected.
