GG is an acronym of “good game”. GG is most often used by competitive gamers wanting to show good sportsmanship, usually at the end of a match. Failing or choosing to not say gg at the conclusion of a match is widely considered BM (bad manners), leading to meme quotes like: “No GG, no skill”.
GG is globally recognized, to such a wide extent that KeSPA – the Korean eSports Association – has rules requiring that professional players in their member games type ‘GG’ in English at the conclusion of each match or face disqualification, monetary fines and other penalties. Even mistyping or accidentally writing ‘gg’ in Hangul (Korean alphabet characters) can provoke further scrutiny by referees and probable penalties for players.
Disqualifications for mistyping GG have occurred as recently as 2016 for Starcraft Brood War player “Sair” who typed GG in Hangul text rather than English like KeSPA rules require at the Avalon MSL Survivor Tour competition.
This video shows pro KeSPA Starcraft Brood War gamer “GoRush” being disqualified in 2009 for accidentally typing “a” at the beginning of a Brood War match. Gaming Slang Terms Similar to GG
As noted above, GG is most often used at the end of a match. The equivalent used at the beginning of matches is “GLHF” which stands for Good Luck, Have Fun. It’s also fairly common to see “gg glhf” typed at the beginning of a match (outside of KeSPA of course).
GG in Gaming Definition Variations
Sometimes players will use GG in a derogatory or troll manner, such as saying GG sarcastically to declare victory or defeat earlier than appropriate, or saying some variation of “gg ez” to sarcastically let someone know that the game was so easy that it was not a challenge to win, and heavily implies that the match was a waste of time for being too easy.
